When it comes to transitioning to a vegan diet, you want to be sure that you have a clear understanding of how to make this transition successful.  Whether you are choosing a vegan diet for moral, ethical or simply for a health reason, you want to be sure that you know what you are doing and that you have all of the proper information at hand.

In order to ensure that you have created a healthy vegan diet plan, it is a great idea to find connections within your local vegan community, i.e., veteran vegans who can be available to answer any questions and those who can be there to support you and guide you.  You may, however, find yourself alone in this process.  If this is the case, seek out an online community and do not be afraid to post questions in the various vegan forums.  Soon you will find yourself sharing tips, recipes and giving positive encouragement, whether online or within your local community.

Many new vegans fall into the trap of eating mock meats and dairy substitutes, making this a primary source of their nutrients.  While these products are great in recreating some of your old favorite dishes, it is important to keep in mind that these foods are generally high in sodium and heavily processed.  It is easy to be a “lazy-vegan” by purchasing readymade frozen vegan foods, pastas, mock meats and vegan goodies; however, these foods will not give you the proper nutrition needed and most likely you will feel fatigued along with some physical weakness.

You want to be sure that you are eating a wide variety of foods and that you are supplying your body with enough healthy foods in order to reach your daily-recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals. A mistake that some new vegans make is that they are not eating enough food.  Not that you need to obsessively count calories, but you do want to keep close monitor of your weight and the way your body feels.

Meal planning is a great way to ensure a healthy vegan diet. We all know that a healthy meal plan should include plenty of greens, legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, vegetables and fruits.  It is also very important to incorporate a variety of proteins, other than beans and tofu, into your diet.  Consider eating seitan, tempeh, quinoa and a variety of nuts. Take some time to shop at your local market, find the foods that are in season and create delicious meals.  If you need additional inspiration, seek out your vegan community for ideas.

Sustaining a healthy vegan diet can be easy if you take the time to prepare meals that have a variety of minerals and vitamins and be sure that you are eating enough foods to feel healthy.  Continue to educate yourself about your new healthy vegan diet and use your knowledge and common sense to avoid everyday mistakes.  Develop your new vegan habits to the best of your ability and keep in mind your goals as you embark on a healthier, happier you.
